Are you a fan of Garbage? Today’s featured artist is Shirley Manson!
Born August 26th 1966, she is a Scottish singer, songwriter, musician, and actress, best known as the lead singer of the alternative rock band Garbage. Manson gained media attention in the 1990s for her forthright style, rebellious attitude, and distinctive voice.
Garbage’s self-titled debut album was released in August 1995, and went on to sell over 4 million copies, buoyed by a run of high charting singles including “Only Happy When It Rains” and “Stupid Girl. She co-wrote and co-produced the entire album with the rest of the band, and quickly became the public face of the band over the course of a tour that took them through to the end of 1996. Manson became the band’s chief songwriter for the follow-up record Version 2.0 which equaled the success of the band’s debut record after its May 1998 release.
Garbage’s intention is to make pop-like songs which mix a variety of genres, with member Steve Marker saying that they wanted to “take pop music and make it as horrible sounding as we can.” A few of these genres include trip hop, grunge, 1980s rock music, techno, power pop and shoegazing. Manson has stated that the band itself “used to describe [their sound] as sci-fi pop, because we felt it was taking a futuristic approach.”
Manson possesses a contralto vocal range, which has been noted for its distinctive qualities as well as her emotive delivery. Elysa Gardner of the Los Angeles Times stated “one of Garbage’s most compelling features is a force of nature: Manson’s vocals, which can convey a multitude of emotions without ever coming across as melodramatic”. Manson has been credited with inspiring later female artists; including Amy Lee, Florence Welch, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Peaches, and Lana Del Rey. Manson is also considered a style icon, influencing various other female artists, and inspiring fashion designers and stylists. Manson identifies as a feminist and has been hailed as a feminist icon.
Garbage’s most recent album, 2016’s Strange Little Birds, was met with positive reviews, and their forthcoming seventh studio album, No Gods No Masters, is set to be released on June 11, 2021.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
