"From Chords to Licks: A Rhythm and Lead Challenge"

Acoustic guitar on a rustic wooden background surrounded by sheet music, guitar picks, and vintage-style items. The text 'From Chords to Licks: A Rhythm and Lead Challenge' appears in a bold, western-style font, evoking a country and folk music vibe aimed at intermediate guitar players learning to blend rhythm and lead techniques

Introduction:

Blending lead and rhythm guitar is one of the most common requests I get from students, and for a good reason—it's a key skill that can elevate your playing. This challenge, originally created in 2022, is perfect for intermediate players or those aspiring to reach that level. The goal is to combine rhythm and lead fills seamlessly, but it also introduces a variety of techniques in a single, cohesive piece.

In this challenge piece, you'll encounter sweeps, palm muting, arpeggios, chord inversions, bass note strumming, and lead fills that jump up the neck with harmonies in sixths, hybrid picking and more. Can you play this song at full speed and identify each technique as it appears?

Full TAB, Audio, and Guitar Pro File

Download the full PDF TAB to get all the details for this piece. I also recommend grabbing the audio track to practice along at your own pace. Using an app like AnyTune Pro+ or Music Speed Changer can help you slow down the track as needed.

If you have Guitar Pro and would like to practice along with a dynamic view of the song, you can download the Guitar Pro (GP) file.

Practice Tips

  1. Start with the Intro: Begin by memorizing the intro section, which covers the first 6 bars. Focus on one bar at a time until you have all 6 memorized.
  2. Move to Part 1: Use the same approach as with the intro, learning one bar at a time until you’ve memorized all of Part 1.
  3. Tackle Part 2: Follow the same method for Part 2, breaking it down bar by bar.
  4. Practice with the Audio: Once everything is memorized, play along with the audio track or Guitar Pro file at 50-60% speed. Gradually work up to 75-80%, focusing on each section individually.
  5. Full Speed: When you’re ready, play the song from start to finish, aiming for 100% speed.

The Star System for Combining Rhythm and Lead:

  • 1 Star ★ – Memorize the intro.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
