This week’s featured artist is John Mayer! Born October 16th 1977, he is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mayer attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, but disenrolled and moved to Atlanta in 1997. Mayer then played local clubs, refining his skills and gaining a following. After his appearance at the 2001 South by Southwest Festival, he was signed to Aware Records, and then Columbia Records. His first two full-length albums, Room for Squares (2001), and Heavier Things (2003) achieved multi-platinum status.

By 2005, Mayer had moved away from the acoustic music that characterized his early records, and begun performing the blues and rock music that had originally influenced him as a musician. He collaborated with blues artists such as B. B. King, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton.

Mayer himself can attribute much of his techniques to imitating blues and blues-rock legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, and Jimi Hendrix. This is why you can hear a little bit of B.B. King in Mayer’s “Gravity,” or a little bit of Stevie Ray Vaughan in “Good Love Is On The Way.” Common techniques he uses to achieve his sound include fretting notes with the left thumb, playing licks over chords, double stops, grace notes, raking, and finger picking.

John Mayer is a guitar collector and has collaborated with several companies to design his own instruments and signature series. These include the Fender Black1, the PRS Super Eagle, and Martin OM-28 John Mayer. He owns over 200 guitars. Mayer has won seven Grammy awards from nineteen nominations, with his first win being in 2003 for his single “Your Body Is a Wonderland”.
