This week’s featured artist is Jack White, who celebrates his 45th birthday tomorrow! Born John Anthony Gillis on July 9th 1975, he is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the duo The White Stripes. He has also had success in other bands and as a solo artist, and has enjoyed consistent critical and popular success and is widely credited as one of the key artists in the garage rock revival of the 2000s.

White founded The White Stripes with fellow Detroit native and then-wife Meg White (whom he took his last name from) in 1997. Despite being married, Jack and Meg publicly presented themselves as siblings. Their 2001 breakthrough album, White Blood Cells, brought them international fame with the hit single and accompanying music video “Fell in Love with a Girl”. The White Stripes’ fourth album, Elephant, was recorded in 2002 over the span of two weeks, and features the commercial hit “Seven Nation Army”, which critics have ranked as one of the best songs of the 2000s decade, and which won Best Rock Song at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards

In 2005, White founded The Raconteurs, and in 2009 founded The Dead Weather. He has also released three solo albums to commercial and critical success.

White owns many instruments and, historically, has tended to use certain ones for specific projects or in certain settings. He has a preference for vintage guitars, many of which are associated with influential blues artists. Much of his equipment is custom-made, for both technical and aesthetic reasons. He has long been a proponent of analog equipment and the associated working methods.

He has won twelve Grammy Awards, and all three of his solo albums have reached number one on the Billboard charts. Rolling Stone ranked him number 70 on its 2010 list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.
