This week’s featured artist is Eric Clapton, who this week celebrates his 75th birthday! Born March 30th 1945, he is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter, and has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time.
Clapton became a prominent member of The Yardbirds and Cream before achieving success as a solo artist, and is known for such classic songs as “Layla,” “Crossroads”, and “Wonderful Tonight.” He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and of Cream.
Clapton has a diverse playing style and is very competent on both electric and acoustic guitar, using both flat-picking and finger-style. Clapton is a fast player when he wants to be, but he also has a way of deeply drawing on a lot of soulfulness and slow energy through his guitar parts.
Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and fourth in Gibson’s “Top 50 Guitarists of All Time”. He was also named number five in Time magazine’s list of “The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players” in 2009.
